I coordinated getting all the video equipment, set up editing sessions in my office, went to every shooting session – there were 4, and transported equipment there and back to both of them.

I recorded sound, edited the sound and video, interviewed people, used the video camera, coordinated the site, coordinated with the clients. There is probably more in there that I am missing.

Not having the correct access to the equipment is huge. We can’t have a production class without the equipment to produce. Our team worked well together and we pulled together to get things done.

I’m not sure I answered your questions, but that is what I had to say.

I talked with the client on the phone about the filming, and tried to set up a future date to interview a Daughter of Charity that works with St. Joe. I coordinated the time to tape at the UBS Location. I helped look at the tape. I helped edit the footage and classify it.

I contact the DePaul CDM Cage and ordered the video equipment, I picked up the Equipment from the cage and I am piloting people to the location today.

The client has cold feet about our logo now. We have been put off until the 20th. I don’t think this is that bad, worse case we use the old logo and just go from there.

I changed the front facing St. Joe logo I created. Added a flower and changed the text.

We need a lab with final cut pro, comfy seats,  and a projector to do a group filming of raw footage and talk about what goes and stays for the final video.

I would love to borrow a mini dv deck of some kind so I don’t have to schedule logging the tape in the labs over the weekend.

I was able to get in touch with Lisa Sullivan and schedule the filming at the Humboldt Park location. We filmed yesterday. We were able to interview the executive director, two volunteers and three participants in the program. We were able to capture several minutes of B roll.
– What’s not going so well? We need to get the next filming scheduled and the St. Joe services people aren’t really responsive. We need to get in to film but time is running out.

Try to film at the Austin location. Log our current tape. Submit logos to the client, and possibly start on design manual.

We need to streamline our logo choices and then move forward with first edsits before submitting to the client. We need to work together to get our film crew together and scheduled.

We were all able to travel to the site to do a visit. The group seems invigorated, and willing to work.

Our teams are confused. People signed up that aren’t communicating, etc. Sometimes the e-mails to the client go unanswered or only partly answered.

Communicate the filming schedule with the St. Joe people. Work on logos, and get the equipment for the recording session.

Kress goes on to say that “Meaning is made in communication, whatever its form.” (Kress 32) Ideas are passed from one person to another. We need to define concepts and ideas, and understand them ourselves to transmit them to someone else. This understanding and interpretation then is communicated, and thus gives meaning (inherited and created) to the topic. This is semiosis .

Kress says that how you convey information is the modes, it is created through social interaction, “Image, writing, layout, music, gesture, speech, moving image, soundtrack and 3D objects are examples of modes used in representation and communication.” (Kress 79) Multimodal communication would be combining two or more of these into one method. Person to person communication is a complex multimodal interaction; we use our speech, pitch and gestures to communicate ideas.

So if meaning is made through communication, and communication is through modes, and if we were to incorporate the terminology of Marshal McLuhan, in “Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man,” then the mode is the message. So Kress and McLuhan agree, in some ways.

So what is it that I am supposed to take away from this reading? I think what I come away with most is that mode matters. Mode can make an idea unattainable, or within reach. We can willfully confuse an issue or deconstruct it. Our chosen mode, and using multiple modes, helps us convey our ideas easier, get our point across, and all around communicate better.

In a recent podcast episode of Radiolab, the host makes a comment that stuck me as something that speaks to this. The show was on limits, and the story was about someone with the greatest memory ever recorded, one seemingly without limit. The problem is that when he would see something, say a cat, it would remind him of every time he ever saw a cat, and he would be bombarded by all the images of every cat he’s ever seen, heard, or listened to someone talk about. The host then says he had never thought about “making sense of the world as an act of negation.” This is the essence of communication too; we choose our words from the tens of thousands in our vocabulary. We choose the correct image and design out of the infinite amount of styles and pictures. We negate everything but the relevant information.

I did not add any text or words to my essay. Instead I included music that I picked specifically because it matched the mood of the piece. The music has no words and the only vocals are musical, not lyrical. The whole movement of the piece is done through sound/music and the switching of the pictures in a slideshow. 

I used a series of pictures that were taken as the photographer climbed the back path to the castle Neuschwanstein in Bavaria, Germany. The pictures themselves do not belie the intentions of the photographer until late in the slideshow. The path could be in many places all over the world, and in fact the photos look like the photographer is heading for a bridge. But the bridge is actually the place where the final photos will be taken, and while it is the goal of the photographer to get there, it is not the goal of the trip. Instead the goal of the trip is to use the bridge to take a picture of the castle. 

When choosing the photos, I made sure to place them in the correct order, so it seems like as they go by, you feel like you are making progress. The music was also added as it works itself into a crescendo. This also helps the viewer get the feeling of climbing. 

The editing process when using images is a little different than using text. Each photo is edited visually and then placed in a sequence. It would be like getting a list of sentences from someone and editing them and sequencing them so they make a story.  

You also I think have to have a balance between obvious and subtle when you use photos to tell a story. The story needs to be a bit obvious for the first time watcher so they remain interested and “get it.” Too many obscure photos in a row may make people shrug and turn it off. You can still inject some subtlety though by adding room for interpretation. This gets people thinking about your piece and interacting with it rather than just viewing it.
